Do you ever wonder where
your food comes from?
Today Veronika gifted us some locally produced
sheep cheese made in the way she described to us
on Sunday when she showed us pictures and told
stories of her camping trip over the mountains of
Romania where she encountered shepherds who
make cheese in the traditional way, leaving their
families in town for the summer while they head for
the highlands with none but themselves and barely
tamed snarling dogs for company. There they milk
the sheep three times a day, make cheese, and feed
the dogs on the whey (because if fed meat the dogs
would develop a taste for it and none would be safe).
The shepherds were happy to see the campers who
bought their cheese and shared cigarettes. Not a lot
happens up there, but if it does no one gets pregnant.
