PDL
invited me to act in their Theatre
Hitchhiking performace
at this year's NEPO
5K. The idea was that unsuspecting
passengers
would get in a parked car and be taken for an
imaginary ride by a "driver."
I didn't know what to do so I just brought along
some props--but first I changed
into my
alter ego The
Captain. Luckily I didn't have to fly
solo. Mike Katell
was already there in fine form so I just slid in
next to him on the passenger side
and we started absurdly bantering. An
inadvertent kernel of truth became my
schtick for the next 2 hours as I handed wigs
and glasses back to our fares:
"There's two ways of getting there," I'd say, "transportation
or transformation.
Where to and who are you?" These two are
unrecognizable. Partly because
of their impromptu makeovers. Also because we'd
never met. But the journey
we shared brought us closer together even
though we never moved an inch. |
