After switching from mudslides to gin and tonics and tying one on with Hillary Clinton, I absconded with three of David Macaulay's books--Pyramid, Castle, Cathedral--and Pogo but I gave Calvin & Hobbes to Jim our new "personal" cab driver who gave us his cell phone number when dropping us off and came in a jiff when we called for 2 a.m. pickup and told us with pride that he's licensed to drive tankers, hazmats, and passenger busses but it's the rush of cabbing 6 pm to 6 am seven nights a week that gets him off. Brown's Law: Work Expands to Fill Available Time

John Berry put me to work painting the new Uptown Espresso at 4th and Wall, paintbrush thick with mixture of joint compound and yellow pigment in one hand, pallette knife in the other for frescoe effects bordering on Venetian Plastering. It was good to practice ambidextrous, work material, and balance all day at tops of high ladders. After a glass of Gallo white at Liberty's I showered and put on the dog for Erik Botsford's going-away party. He and his partner will be sharing a 2 bdrm apartment in Hell's Kitchen for $3,500/month--and I thought Seattle was pricey!
