Sobering visit from an old friend
ended yesterday when I put him in a cab to SeaTac. He disappeared after deplaning
in Chicago. His wife files a missing person report but we all know the cause:
alcohol. I'd never seen anyone so debased and it got me to thinking about
my own tendencies, the logical extension of which
would be, if not addiction, a lifetime of dreams deferred to various forms
of substance escapism. So, biting the bullet, today I embark on an experiment
in sobriety--one part solidarity with my friend's resolve to go into detox,
two parts toxic fatigue, and just a splash of self-respect thrown in for
good measure. We'll see. |
