Found some trash
in a roadside
ditch: tattered flag
that flew off
someone's car, a camel cigarette
box,
and yellow, red, & clear bits of busted taillight
cover.
Seemed fitting to put the shattered
plastic in the box
and wrap it in the
jingoistic gesture
reduced to litter,
this day when the first flag-draped coffin
came back
from Afghanistan. An old soldier once
told me,
"There's cannon fodder and there's cannon
fodder."
The promotional coupon on the outside of
the pack
said it all: a desert scene, the word CASH
so strong. |
