Today is observance of MLK's birthday, so Bruce
and Connie had off and sent Sadie to a babysitter for the day so they could
finish painting their new house. I went over as part of work-for-computer
barter and to tie up loose ends left dangling when I painted most of their
place in November. As I painted window trim, I thought how nice it is when
friends help friends out. I had no other plans for the day so I didn't bother
watching the clock. This led me to thinking how one of life's great luxuries
is the unhurried lunch. When it came time to replace some trim, something
about these nails really got to me. I'm not sure why, but I saw them through
my (deceased) mother's eyes and imagined
her delight at their tidy organization. Civilization is pretty fucked, but
shiny nails like these offer some consolation. |
