buildings are still going up in seattle, most conspicuously in south lake
union, where huge pits, chainlink fences, and traffic barricades predominate.
the only place i ever saw more cranes was in berlin, and there the sense
(probably erroneous) was that somehow they were still rebuilding from
the
war. here the city has declared war on itself, smashing the old in
order to start afresh. everyone with work is told to be grateful for it.
