In-ground
pools
are
pretty uncommon in Seattle. Summer is just short and
unpredictable
enough to where the practical and puritanical populace eschews the
maintenance expense. So it was
a pleasant surprise when I showed up at Ballard backyard gig in the
guise of my
alter ego Port-a-Party
and saw a wet blue rectangle deep enough for a diving board at far end
where I would spin 45s to celebrate the 50th of a Northwest
native who said it was the first it had ever rained on her birthday.
Still, it was a good time. The rain held off, blankets and dancing kept
people warm.
...But I spoke too soon when in parting I said, "I'm surprised no one's
fallen in."
