it's been a mild
and protracted fall, fiery colors lingering
for weeks, a little unusual for
these
parts but not unprecedented. then
again, maybe an example of how it's
getting
hotter all over, Earth having its hottest
year on record for the third year in a
row.
nostalgia is a craving for our
conditioning. the sound of this man raking
triggered early
memories of when it was my chore to
clear the yard, so proud of the dozen
plastic bags
lining the curb. fallen leaves feed
the soil, but we buried them in landfills,
burned them,
blew them into sewers, replaced their
nutrients with store-bought fertilizers, all
for the
sake of ornamental lawns. i'm not
blaming this guy, just questioning a social
norm. he
rolled his yard
waste bin to the curb so they could be
trucked away. Far, far away....
