When invited to project
video for five nights straight in a cold,
hard
parking
lot, it helps to cozy it up a bit,
so I finagled a freight
damaged patio furniture
set from some wheeler-dealers
in Kent, purchased a propane heater,
set up a tabletop drive-in theater
complete with toy car
audience, and put out some bowls of
mixed nuts for that outdoor living room
feel. Tube amp
gramophone on tailgate, honking huge
rental projector lighting up the dark grey
wall from atop lumber rack. Borealis Fest
is a showcase of state-of-the-art video
and light technology, but my motley mise
en scene complete with Jeff's '71 VW bus
and wafting nag champa made it
feel more like a Dead show caravan. I
stuck another finger in the past by
projecting head-
stone inscriptions from Lake View Cemetery,
turning the whole building into a monument for a
city that's a ghost of itself. |
