Conventional wisdom once held that using
an umbrella marked
you as a tourist or newcomer in Seattle. I even
alluded to it here.
It's not that Seattleites were somehow hardier or
more amphibious,
it's just that the precipitation was spread
much thinner. The norm
used to be a fine mist, barely a drizzle. But
times change, and so has
the climate. The rain comes heavier now, in drips
and dollops, big weepy drops
and even downpours. Last month almost doubled the average.
Still, some cling
to the myth that umbrellas just aren't "done"
here. I think it depends. I got
by today with a rainjacket. These folks didn't.
They looked like tourists.
