i first learned
the concept of temporary autonomous zones at burning
man in 1998, when that festival felt more like a
social experiment than a glitzy party for the
privileged. i took the idea of radical urban
transformation to heart and applied TAZ ideas to Car-Free Seattle, an
alternative transportation thought experiment made
flesh in the streets. i was disappointed then that
it didn't lead to big, fast change, but seeing the
emergence of the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone
reminds me that the struggle requires persistence,
and huge strides
can occur when you least expect it.
who would have guessed when the
police left that this flowering of
community would instantly
take their place? another
world is not just possible,
but absolutely necessary.
renegogiate reality!
