a lot of
irony here at the corner of broadway and east
harrison. installed in 1981, the sculpture
below by
Rich Beyer is called The
Itinerant, a euphemism for bum at the
tail end of simpler times when
living on
the street could still be romanticized
as a lifestyle choice by some. i have
no idea if the awning is a defunct
bus shelter or part of the art, but
the lumpy recumbent aluminum
figure strikes me as kissing
cousin to hostile architecture.
i bet the person sleeping
on the wet ground would
rather use the bench, perhaps
dreams of a mattress just out of
reach on the other side of the wall.
