it's tempting to get upset over this butt ugly mess but it's a real can't see the forest for the trees moment when you consider the centuries of degradation that led up to this: invasion, genocide, broken treaties, resource depletion, extinctions, endless pollution of air, water, and land--the whole syndrome of civilization. these are just candles on a layer cake of destruction we've all had a hand in baking. i've seen people who should know better casually drop a butt who would never dream of dumping out a bucketful all at once though it amounts to the same thing over time, but we all ignore the incremental impacts although they all add up. it's how we manage our cognitive dissonance.
