when
i moved to seattle sight unseen, i rode this
selfsame train route to get there.
leaving new york flayed my soul, but i
expected to return in two years. a quarter
century later, i seem to have become a pacific
northwest lifer. i don't really miss
NYC but meeting Charles (r.)
and his siblings reminded me how much i do miss
new yorkers--the outspoken,
open-minded, street smart old school kind. we were
both there in 1971--i was a toddler in washington
heights, he was a plumber with
good timing who bought in on the lower east side
when everyone else was selling.
my immigrant family got out ASAP too, moving "out
east" to long island... and this
trio gave me shit for that, the way city people
do, and it made me feel right at home.
