spacer we diverted from our usual route to
beach to lend Slavka a tool, which led to
chance encounter with James, who asked if we
wanted to join him on a quick beer run across
the channel to Union. hell yeah! his boat hauls
ass but we took it slow to observe porpoises.
after briefly going ashore we cruised further
down the canal to ogle the extensive estates
of the Gates and Nordstrom families. after a
quick dip, we tooled all the way up to Dewatto
Bay, where 100 year old cabins on stilts and
quirky shacks offered glimpses of a romantic
way of life, humble yet epic, perched between
forest and sea. it felt both haunted and alive,
the domain of ancient spirits and hardy blood
lines holding fast to their claims. James relished
his role as our guide, filled us in on all the local
lore and natural history. after another swim,
we raced the setting sun back home--an
impromptu jaunt turned 3 hour tour.
