Every gun that is made, every
warship
launched,
every rocket fired signifies, in the final
sense, a theft from those
who hunger and are not fed, those who are
cold
and are not clothed. ...The cost of one modern
heavy bomber is
this: a modern brick school in more than 30
cities.
...We pay for a single destroyer with
new homes that could have
housed more than 8,000 people. ...This is not
a
way of life at all, ...it is humanity hanging
from a cross of iron.
So said
the last half decent Republican president, the
general who
put a boot up Hitler's ass (tho' the fight
against fascism didn't end there). Today, Matt and I
visited "a single
destroyer" built just before Eisen-
hower would warn of the dangers of the rampant
militarism
that has defined the USA since WW2.
As if to underscore his point, this ship was part
of the
incident used to justify the escalation of
the Vietnam War, which was very good for the
arms business and our navy vet guide Mike
ascribed simply to, "LBJ
wanted to
drop some bombs." This boat's job
was to lob shells from 12 miles off
shore. Mike touted the 5-inch guns'
accuracy but precision
is what power
always claims when killing indiscriminately.
It was surprising to learn how petty the concerns
of the sailors were--Mike spoke of little
other
than promotions, perks, and the onboard caste
system of who ate where. This year's election
was between two parties wholly beholden to the
military-industrial-congressional
com-
plex.
"Where are the lifeboats?" I asked.
