in
the old days, quality lumber was so plentiful they
used clear vertical grain fir boards for
subflooring. (today, plywood or OSB is the norm.)
i had to pull ours because of water damage and to
lay ground cover and insulate the crawlspace.
despite the nail holes and stains, the old shiplap
planks are still sound, so i ripped, planed,
filled, sanded, pre-treated, stained, and sealed
some to reuse as baseboard and trim. they
look good to me, with the flaws only adding
to the charm.
