it's been
raining for days. and nights. a soft drizzle
lulls you to sleep,
later a violent downpour jerks you awake. but it
all sounds like relief--
enough to finally quench the bear
gulch fire after 4 months and 20K acres.
weather like this softens the edges, and when it
comes to relaxing forms of
travel, the bremerton ferry is right up there
with amtrak, a
chance to watch
the world go by, enchanting even when there's
not much variety, whether sere
great plains or slate grey sea, they're
exercises in relativity--you sit motionless
as the world spins under you, arriving just in
time to once again leave.
