spacer went out early to timelapse the ebb flow for 40-minute long music video i'm making
for a friend's band. it's a concept album that opens with the line, the tide goes out,
the table is set--a coast salish saying sarah quoted in this mural a year before we ever
imagined we'd end up a literal stone's throw from an epic tideflat (but it's a longer walk
than that because by foot it's not a straight shot). the oysters revealed by receding water
glinted like jewels in the low morning sun. as i gawped slackjawed, a neighbor came out
to tell me orcas had been sighted just a few miles off. because my iphone was occupied
filming, i had to hasten home in person to alert sarah; also grabbed the 200mm canon
inherited from darrell, a professional tv cameraman and avid wildlife photographer
whose spirit lingers in the long lens he used to look through. i channeled his energy,
positioned aluminum tube tripod and pointed the camera in their general direction,
spotting through binoculars, blind finger on the button...
they were more than a mile
away but we
could see them breaking in unison, hitching a ride on the outgoing tide
