what is wrong with
this floor? instead of laying it down, i ran it up a
17 foot tall wall. whoops! too late now, we'll just
have to live
with it. this wood used to be the downstairs
subfloor, but it got wrecked when the pipes burst
and flooded the house (long before it was ours). i
had to tear it all out and most was beyond repair,
but as i cut, pried, and denailed the shiplap planks, i noticed some
of them were clear vertical grain (CVG) fir, a quality standard
that wouldn't be squandered on a subfloor today
(shiplap mostly replaced by engineered products such
as plywood or OSB). though some of the
stains go too deep to buff out, planing,
sanding, conditioning, and then shellacking
the boards made them presentable (in a wabi-sabi vein). working with
salvaged lumber is more time consuming and can be
frustrating because this stuff wasn't milled to a
high tolerance, so in addition to the reclamation
process there was a lot of additional trimming
necessary to get the widths to match and everything
to lie flat in the same plane. it feels slightly
ridiculous to expend so much effort on this as the planet combusts and society crumbles. i should be
out there saving the world! but does this country want saving?
