My intention... was to suggest that all things--stories, incidental
sounds, from the environment, and, by extension, beings--are related, and
that this complexity is more evident when it is not oversimplified by an
idea of relationship in one person's mind. |

These photos are not intentionally related to the above Cage quote.
I found all three in a concert program from Prague, circa 1994. Each one
reminds me of a different member of my family--my grandfather, father, and
step-father, respectively. The Czech gene pool is not very wide or deep,
so it's not surprising that there are similarities. I keep these pictures
around, tucked in various books; they serve the function of any family
snapshots--to remind of certain people. It doesn't matter that they are images
of strangers. What counts are the associations they trigger.
I've been walking to and from work lately, 40 or so minutes each way. What
a luxury! It's been too cold and/or slippery for biking. (For me, at least,
though every day I see hardier people braving the ice, snow, slush, and sleet.)
At first walking seemed impractical, slow, almost boring. But now I cherish
this time spent "out of the loop," caught between here and there, my mind
mostly empty. |
