Sarah's mom Virginia (nee Weber)
grew up in the logging company town
of
Cass,
West Virginia where her father
managed the sawmill from 1948-1960,
by which time the surrounding hills
had been picked clean and operations
ceased. Unlike most lumber towns which
were simply abandoned after the woods
were used up, Cass was preserved right
down to the special
Shay
steam loco-
motives which ran log trains down from
the heights to the mill on the river. Today
they carry tourists and I wonder what
Sarah's grandfather would think of
his granddaughter's new
paintings.
