It's tempting to think of Maui as paradise,
but any place can be pretty nice
if you've got money, health, and a minimum of
bad habits. The history
here
is sad as anywhere and it's still playing out.
Businessmen and missionaries
got theirs and they're still wringing it dry.
The same chain stores and white
crosses that dot the mainland from Maine to
California mar the island,
connected by roads you need cars to make use
of. But at least there's
a bus.
We rode it today and bought some stuff. I felt
like a colonist.
