You
can make ferry reservations
two months, two weeks, or two days
in advance. We forgot to do it in time and
so had to get up at 4 a.m. to
catch the 6:25 to Friday Harbor where
Sarah finagled a brief writing
retreat at the Whiteley Center. I
was cross-eyed with fatigue after a
rough week of hard work and insomnia but
we made it with ease.
Loading the boat took longer than usual
and once we were finally
parked on starboard car deck I couldn't
believe the stench. I figured it
was just that low-tide stank but Sarah
pointed out the pilings riddled
with cormorant
nests and streaked with guano. They,
too, were just
getting their day on. They seemed somewhat
bumbling, sliding and
skidding as they touched down on surfaces
slick with their own shit.
It was all so appetizing I went straight
to the galley for two
sausage
and cheese sandwiches on french
toast, heavy on ketchup & mayo.
