here in seattle, the politics of love are on
the rise, with a message of unity, inclusion,
and solidarity for all people. Raz Simone (above right) is emerging
as a leader, channeling energy and keeping
marches on message both in language and
practice. there wasn't a cop in sight
tonight at rally in central district
(although i'm sure they had their eyes on it) and
subsequent march back to capitol hill was
100% peaceful and inspiring. one
way to effect systemic change is to create new
and better systems that make the old ones
obsolete, and for that to happen it helps to
have coherence. the list of demands is
growing more pointed and concrete steps are
being taken to create a community-based mutual
aid organization—Seattle People's
Protection—an autonomous alternative to the
big-stick militaristic policing model whose
primary function is feeding fresh human capital stock to
the slave labor pool of the
prison-industrial complex.
this violent, exploitive system is being
exposed across the country as protests against
police brutality are met with... escalating and ever more
blatant police brutality. they've gotten
away with it for so long they can't see the
tide is turning. a win is not guaranteed, but
as chris hedges says, "I do
not fight fascists because I will win. I fight
fascists because they are fascists." if
nothing else, there is grace
in striving for the world you want to see
rather than abjectly surrendering to the
serfdom they try to force feed.
