Len Tukwila is a driftwood
sculptor from a 1988 SNL skit,
a stereotype of a northwest hippie-dippy sensitive-o
artist.
it's one of sarah's favorite tv references, so it's
only fitting
that she'd find herself in the actual Tukwila carving a log,
the art component of riverton creek restoration
project.
she stripped the bark, stained the exposed wood with
two
solutions (vinegar and steel and quebracho), chalked
marks, then dremeled
out scores of droplet shapes. like water, she is quietly
persistent . . .
