Yaroub Al-Obaidi (right)
suggested the Al-Mudhif collaboration when
he chanced to attend a talk Sarah gave
where she outlined her intention
to use phragmites as a sculptural material
in her Water Spirit project. Being
from Iraq, he was familiar with the mudhifs she
showed as examples. Similar to how I'm helping
with the structural aspects of her installations,
Yaroub recruited his brother Mohaned (left) to lead
the mudhif construction. After a
couple of slogging days digging
and grading
the rocky sloped terrain, it's starting to take
shape, with three of five planned arches roughly
in place.
