with novels, what
matters most to me is the strength, clarity, and
tone of the
authorial voice. similarly, with cinema i tend
to latch on to specific directors
whose individual style can make or break a
movie. so far, 2022 has been a
bad year for some hitherto favorites who
built their reputations as scrappy
indie filmmakers but then botched the transition
to blockbuster budgets.
edgar
wright, robert
eggers, and now jordan
peele recently released much
ballyhooed films that meander self-indulgently
over bloated runtimes. the
only funny and fitting thing about NOPE
was how after it let out, alarms
went off urging evacuation but everyone just
shrugged and i
filmed it all.
