are the ties that bind people together? with this
crew, it began with a drumkit bought for $5 in
2008. that led to finding a jam space, which
against all odds we still have to this day, 780
weekly meetings later, the center of gravity that
holds us in a shared orbit. my attendance has been
spotty since moving out to the country, but i go
back when i can, and this weekend the 4Shadows
convened here in Tahuya, where the weather
complied as we made a different kind of music: one
of a cappella conversation, crescendoes
of laughter, and caesuras of awe as a
squadron of dragonflies protected us from
mosquitoes and meteors streaked the night sky like
flourishes from a conductor's baton. Shadowfest
