ab-
is the new normal. used to be the northwest was
known for its perpetual but gentle drizzle, more
of a mist, which is where the "Seattleites
don't use umbrellas" ethos was born. now
the forecast is populated with flood warnings
and exciting new terms like "atmospheric
river"--which, overnight, touched down in
our backyard, 4 inches total in 24 hours. it
sort of felt like a snow day, all other plans
preempted as we dealt with moving surface water
away before it could reach the house. though not
ideal, it is invigorating to be shaken
out of one's routine.
