I
regretted missing Fury Road
on the big screen, so I screamed "witness me!" and
swore a blood oath to see the prequel Furiosa
in a theater because bigger and louder is better
when it's all vroom and boom. And it was! Sweeping
immersive desert vistas and seat-shaking rumble of
motors and explosions made for an epic spectacle
both seen and felt. So why were there only five
other people in the audience? I dunno, maybe the
much bemoaned "death of movie theaters" has
something to do with the 30 minutes of ads and
trailers that pushed the listed
start time of 8:20 pm to 8:50, with about half
the ads having nothing to do with cinema, just
straight up commercials for cars, soda pop, and
insurance. Why should anyone pay to be subjected to
this bombardment of demented consumerist claptrap?
Theaters are in a death spiral where shrinking
revenue from ticket sales and concessions is
compensated by ad placements which diminish the
experience and further alienate moviegoers, who
increasingly opt to become moviestayers at home. You
hate to see it. As for the
film itself...
