with
prius fob lost, doors locked, and the spare in tahuya, i needed to
find a way to get there from seattle by public
transit. it's possible! light rail to pioneer
square, short walk to downtown terminal, fast passenger ferry
to bremerton,
#3 bus to belfair, where
i arranged last minute to be picked up by mason
county transit dial-a-ride.
with an hour to spare, i bought essentials, ate
lunch, then waited in
the sun at the small
park that doubles as a bus stop. usually i
just drive by, but now i got up close to it, a
moment of rest and reflection, down to ground
level to look up at a mushroom's underside to
check if it was the desirable kind. i can't tell
but its delicate heart-shaped gills called my
name. just kidding, that was my ride, arrived
right on time. i boarded the empty short bus with
shoulder bag and two sacks of groceries. the
driver apologized; we were making an unscheduled
detour to pick up another passenger. fine by me, i
said, i'm all for efficiency. we sidetracked to bear
creek store to pick up a woman whose cat,
she proclaimed, broke all her plates; nonetheless
she was on her way to qfc for a case of fancy
feast on sale. 25 minutes after we left, she got
off right back where we'd started. but now at last
we were ready for the final push home. i was glad
the driver opted for the scenic route, a 35 mph
half hour drive along hood canal, the sun
flickering through half naked flaming autumn
trees, the high tide flat and inviting, as
our convo turned cosmic.... |
