this is
about as much sun falls on the house this time of
year, just that narrow band of late afternoon light
finally slipping between the evergreens. across the
road, it
was spring, but here in our shady hollow,
winter clung with a billion brittle fingers, the
crystalline growth of a frost forest, crunching like
smashed chandeliers underfoot. we slouch homeward
like our shaggy forebears to their ice cave, where
cold keeps the meat fresh until it's time to drag
another shank to the fire, but in our case it's
frozen tofu. it's a sign of a sound roof if there
are no melted hot spots, but all it means here is
the attic is the same temperature as outside. but
the floors, walls, and ceilings are all insulated,
and the smoke signals it's cozy indoors.
