went to see a friend's band perform in the intimate setting of hotel crocodile lobby. they were tight, high energy, and played to the SRO crowd with an infectious glee. michael cepress is a tender soul, an accomplished clothing designer now branching out to a music career with more ambition and focus than i've ever mustered. i'm kind of awed by his level of self-promotional confidence. he plays with gusto and verve, especially on the keys, which he pounds boogie woogie willy nilly. i only wished it was a real upright or baby grand instead of an electric. when i mentioned this after the show, he said he and his bandmates have had the same conversation. after all, the piano is a percussion instrument and there's no substitute for the forceful but subtle vibrations that emanate from a resonant wood box when an actual hammer strikes a string. |
