northwest summers tend to be hot and dry
but all bets are off in these off-kilter
times, which today turned out for the best as
unseasonable cooler temps and a steady soaking
rain lingered, drizzling an inch and a half
over the past 24 hours, a much needed sop for
the bear gulch fire, a
tragedy that's been unfolding unabated for the
past 6 weeks. i've pissed on enough campfires
to know one sprinkling won't douse the blaze
but hopefully it will slow the spread. it
slowed me down, that's for sure. i stood
mesmerized for half an hour as raindrops agglomerated
on the shiny bottom of an old upturned coffee
can, a microcosm of the human tendency to form
ever larger units until they become unwieldy
and slide off the stage of history, dragged
down by their own weight. i got drenched!
