for this month's edition
of Sake Nomi Record Night,
the theme was "transformations" so i selected
a few cuts that twisted me when i was young
into who i am still becoming--and didn't even
notice until later that what i brought could all
be filed under ear candy. teenage
intros to
hip-hop and punk felt like rites of
passage,
but my sister's Candy Man LP that i
brought to kindergarten
show and tell
made the most
lasting impact
when Ms. Plug
played it for the
class: i danced
with a wild joy
and saw my
first crush staring
at me from across
the room, which
made me boogie
even harder... until
she grabbed her
friend, pointed, and
they laughed. i
froze,
feigned invisibility, and vowed to never dance
again. after only a decade, i got over it.
mostly. but i took tonight as an opportunity to transform
and put it behind me forever by re-enacting the scene. in an
eerie echo of 50 years earlier, two women pointed at
my dancing, but this time i chose to believe they
were laughing with me.
