Ever get the feeling your brains

have been sucked out? I think that's what
happened to this magnificent dragonfly, victim
(I suspect) of a wasp because a bird would have made
a bigger mess; here it appeared the head had been scraped
clean with mandibular precision. Must have been an ambush
because I found it clinging lifelike as if it didn't know what hit it.

I had my brain scooped out one tiny spoonful at a time, all the TV
I watched as a child, the rot and waste of replacing a natural mind
with sitcoms, blockbusters, and commercials--the lowest common
denominators in a simulacrum of culture. I sympathize with this 'fly
cuz I too have nothing left behind the eyes. Oh well, off to mail a record!

I topped off my tires with floorpump; stiff but well under the max because the
inner tubes are a little brittle. It's an old 10 speed and when I pedal the 2-lane
blacktop no-hands inhaling salt air of ocean inlet, I travel back in time to when
life was less cluttered and the future was more than something to be dreaded.

At post office, spoke of the narrowly averted calamity of Aldrich Fire, then on
the ride back I was shown the wreckage of amateur July 4th fireworks display
that literally went sideways and blew a hole in this boat, sending people flying.

Dragonflies live only two weeks, but it seems longer because they don't blink.
Close your eyes, leave the body behind--you won't so much fly as slowly rise.
