Went shrimping for the first time today, just along for the ride on
a neighbor's boat. It feels like an ancient practice, though lightened by
tech advances--115 hp motor, electric assist winch, alloys and plastics in
every component. The bait, traps, and lines were all to be expected, but what
startled me was the practice of ripping the live
shrimp in half. With their iridescent eyes so
prominent, I just couldn't do it, volunteered
instead to pull all the pots--haul up the traps
at a steady rate to keep the catch in its cage.
It wearied my arms, blistered my fingers,
tore skin open in three places from
                                      barehanding wet rope, but
                                                what hurt most was
                                                          watching so
                                                           much life
                                                              expire.
