The
day after American Thanksgiving, Sarah
called me in Minneapolis to tell of the
inexplicable traffic jam up and down Fremont
Avenue (where we live). "Maybe everyone's
out shopping," I lamely guessed, because in
Minneapolis the big news was the arrest of
two protesters who hung a Buy Nothing Day banner
at the Mall of America--a pretty
sacrilegious thing to do. The next morning I
read in a Minneapolis paper that a bus
had plunged off the far end of this bridge
in Seattle after a lunatic shot the driver.
I called Sarah, who hadn't yet heard the
news, even though we live only three blocks
from where the bus landed after
its 50-foot fall.
