We celebrated my mother's 65th birthday two days early with brunch at the Black Forest, her favorite German restaurant. My niece has developed a Greta Garbo complex when it comes to the camera, a problem which her grandmother never had. After I shot this picture of Sarah she turned fully round in her seat, knocking that milkglass over in the process.

 
No need to cry over that--if she'd spilled my beer that would have been different. My mother's meat was too tough for her to eat plus she still didn't have her appetite back after a bad reaction to chemotherapy that put her in the hospital for a week. I finished off my own big meal then polished off her veal. I never have trouble eating or sleeping on my visits to Minneapolis.

Coping mechanisms, I guess.
