February 26, 1999
today i saw something
that's rare for seattle:
shadows!
i'd almost forgotten
people cast their own doubles
against aurora street bridge supports
and windowless sides of stores
guess i've got one too
but i kept it behind me
eyes closed, face to the sun
night is the shade
of the planet
we're sitting under
it starts with happy hour
at Gould Hall where
Icelandic Elias is dwarfed
and finds it faster to crawl
on the muppie studio terrace
you can smoke an American Spirit,
take a piss, and watch the traffic
go back and forth
the bare-bellied waitress at Flowers
asks, Can I get you anything else?
Tell her what you need and she
says hers is at home but you can try
the sidewalk outside the 7-11
your friend goes in for chocolate
while you loiter with a cigarette
but young missionary women
scare the dealers away
as they try to save
a recumbent bum who tells them
to turn around so he can have
a better look at their butts
walk around the block
and thru Safeway parking lot
before meeting a broker
who'll take you to a corner
where across the street
an arrest is underway
but the guy with the goods
nods OK after first asking
if you're a cop and then says
Hell no! when you ask him the same
at BP break a twenty
for a pack of gum
and give the guy 19 bucks
the middleman gets his fee
and the rain starts so you go
back home on the bus,
hand in pocket the whole way
fingering the bud
