Some
time ago, I boo-hoo'd that Seattle's music
scene had great talent and venues but lacked
audiences.
I couldn't figure it out. Tonight's KRS-ONE all
ages show at Chop Suey set me straight. All
ages. For those
of you who don't know, Seattle has some of the
most fucked up rules regarding alcohol and
music. Basically,
most shows here are 21+, effectively cutting off
the people most excited about music from seeing
their favorite
performers live. So what you get is a lot of
crusty old farts standing around in half empty
clubs sipping at their
booze. But not tonight. The crusty old farts
were there (yo!), penned in their booze corral,
but the floor was
packed with enthusiastic youngsters who
danced, threw their hands up in the air, and
alternately held lighters
and cel phones (taking pictures) aloft as Common
Market and KRS-ONE rocked the house,
starting with a
loyalty-building hip-hop nostalgia trip before
getting into the meat of the show--ripping GW a
new asshole.
