Sarah's big art project involves the 23 sites of the Alliance for Watershed Education, a network of environmental centers that focuses on the vital Delaware basin. If that sounds ambitious, you're right! "Complex" was the word of the day as a dozen staffers gathered at the Heinz Wildlife Refuge to get familiar with the mighty phragmites, an invasive plant usually considered a useless scourge but which has some beneficial applications, such as durable highly insulative thatched roofs and structures as well as aesthetic potentials as a sculptural material. We harvested a sample in sleety rain, and though it was muddy and cold no one complained. Conservationists are a hardy lot. Having a sense of larger mission tends to lighten one's heart. |
