| One surprise in Two Years Before the Mast is how much time is spent on maintenance underway. It was a point of pride in those days for a ship to return in better condition than when it left, and Thomas followed that lead by making repairs as we beelined to BC to add Sarah and his friend Brian to our crew at Ganges on Salt Spring Island, where we bucketed seawater on red wine to keep it from staining the deck. |
