sarah's
mom jennie signed us up through her
church for a volunteer shift at a columbus
food bank run by LSS.
i was impressed by how organized it was.
perishable items--meat, eggs, dairy, produce--were
given away to any and all, while "shelf-stable"
goods required pre-order, allocated on a points
system. my job was to assemble orders from
pick-list printouts, a kind of scavenger hunt that
appealed to my inner gamer. set up in the parking
lot of a suburban community center, distribution
was on a drive-thru basis. some of the cars were
barely running beaters, illustrating obvious need,
while others looked shiny and new, reminder that
outward appearances don't tell the whole story.
