i resolved to
dedicate today to computer work, but first i needed
to install the final board of the
paneled wall i've been nibbling away at all
summer. i figured it would only take an hour or two,
but that was just wishful thinking. cutting the 1x8 board to length (100.5")
was easy. then i ripped it to 6" wide, conveniently
removing a 1" strip of damage, but then i needed to
recreate the shiplap rabbet via a couple more
passes on the tablesaw. now came the tricky part--scribing the contour of the
irregular brickwork that used to be exterior until
the former owner enclosed it when he built one of
many ad hoc additions over the years. it was the
last piece of the puzzle, and fittingly i used a jigsaw
to cut it. it took more than one attempt, and this
picture shows how i marked high spots with a wite-out pen. once those
protrusions were removed, the board fit but was
still a little too snug, so i used a track saw to trim an oblique
sliver off the straight side to even out the gap
between the adjacent panel. great! but now i noticed
the board sticking out a little proud at the bottom,
so i laid it on the horses facedown and shaved the
backside with a couple of passes of a hand planer. time flies when
you're hunched over a plank, sucking dust and seeing
the world in 1/32nd inch increments. when finally
finished, it was 2:30 pm, a mere four hours after i
started, much of it spent walking back and forth
between work station and wall. estimating how long a job will take is the hardest part. |
